It's been a few years since I've listened to Death. Always interesting revisiting old bands.

Vestiges - The Descent of Man

I'm at one of those pivotal moments in musical rapture while listening to this. I can't describe it so I'll write a review about it later, but think a very subdued, desperate and melancholy black metal affair. It possesses such an intensity that words fail me currently.

I listened to a few songs off of that Deafheaven record and I'm not sure I understood what was going on. Sounded like they were trying to go in two different directions. Didn't exactly hate it but it confused me.

Falls of Rauros - Earth's Old Timid Grace

This song always makes me wistful. Can't wait for the Panopticon/Falls of Rauros split.

It's okay, but I pretty much have the same opinion. I don't know why all these hipster kiddie outlets keep saying it's revolutionary and groundbreaking. This whole sound has been done before, except with maybe less of a post-rock influence. If anything it's kinda boring.

After listening to the whole album, Ashes Against the Grain and .neon did what they were trying to do, except better.

I wish Agalloch would go back to doing Ashes Against the Grain sort of material. They really had something going there. Herbst booted Neige out of Lantlos so one can only imagine that his content will stay much the same without him. Sucks because I really liked Neige's vocals on his music. It allowed him to go in a direction he so evidently distances in Alcest.

Deafheaven came a bit late to the party offering little more than an eyebrow-raising record in the wake of post-black metal bands come and gone. I love the subgenre to death, but man.

Only problem I have really is why it's getting the attention it's receiving. It shouldn't have been more than a blip on most people's music radar.

When im bored at work all i do is replay this album on my phone....

Finally got around to the new Sabbath album. It sucks.

HORSE the Band - Rotting Horse

I think the A Natural Death record was a testament to HORSE's ability to stay within the paradigm of their frenetic hardcore meets Nintendo musing, yet still remind the listener that there's something beyond music in their creativity. Smarter than they sound and look, that's for damn sure.

It's pretty easy to crack a joke at a band that apparently doesn't take itself seriously, but I think that's exactly why it's good. They don't overestimate themselves, try to have a good time while making full use of popular metaphors to illuminate an otherwise ridiculous, hopeless life. I wouldn't go as far as to say it's serious music, because it isn't - the atmosphere they create isn't about that, but I believe Winneke and Engstrom have some repressed negativity that comes out on their records, and in my humble opinion, it's for the better.

Listen to Insane Clown Posse instead. At least they know they're clowns.
