Metal is defined by riffs. That being said, symphonic metal isn't metal due to lack of riffs.

Is that right?

Pretty much this. Symphonic metal is like the agreed upon idiom to describe the sub-genre. I guess the more literal phrase of Riffless Shitstorm doesn't sit well with its fans.

Is The Who even allowed to call themselves that anymore? Each member was a massive part of that band and half are dead. They should go all Page-Plant like when they didn't call themselves Led Zeppelin until they replaced Bonham with his son who played exactly like him.

Queen is not the greatest band in the world. Each album had a big hit on it yet the rest of the songs usually were pretty generic.

Dio's studio albums were weak overall. His only great album was his first one. The rest suffered from the same thing Queen's did. A few great songs and mostly filler.

I really like Iron Maiden's 2000's albums

Dream Evil was good but I didn't find Last in Line to be that special.

yeah alcest isn't symph, though i heard they are going to start incorporating strings into the new material which has got me pumped, not sure how long I could stay complacent with the current sound (not that its bad, they just need to evolve a bit after the last album i think (still love it though)).  

kamelot has got riffs.  epica isn't bad, im not a huge fan, but they have some neat things here and there.  much prefer epica over nightwish.  do agree on the growls thing though... they've always irked me a bit.

i also would like to throw this out there for debate

I meant to say that metal subgenres are defined by their specific riffing styles. Sure there's also more stuff along with that but too lazy to give a comprehensive and holistic definition.

Probably should have clarified with Tull. Half of Tull's music sounds the same to me, but the other half is fuckin amazing. And for Queen's songs that I do like, I really like them.

i have a problem with adele. the songwriting is kinda lazy. the songs have way more potential than what the final product is, they could be doing a lot more with things. i agree though, she can sing

Adele is too fat.

Gaga's gimmick is better than her music.

Skyfall is my favourite Bond song - although she did a bad job singing it at the Oscars. No energy into it.

ghost is great but honestly i can't pick a favorite album. he has great moments in most of his albums and they are all different so comparing is almost ridiculous

Sex & Religion is a pretty great album. But man... Ghost. That albums still blows me away. LOR is right though, he has such a diverse catalog that comparing them is about pointless. But Ghost just affected me in a way that none of his other work has come close to

The best thing Townsend did was City and Biomech. His DTP stuff is garbage aside from a few songs here and there. I don't see how anyone likes that. He needs to go back on drugs and the skullet.

It's good but I like Biomech and City better. His stuff up until the mid 2000s is good and then he decided that wackiness and eccentricity could be substitutes for good music.

Ghost isn't really wacky or eccentric at all. The other stuff, sure.

deconstruction takes about 20 listens until you actually start understanding what the fuck is going on... i love that album though.  sometimes it IS WAY TOO MUCH. but some songs on it are really awesome.  Stand is incredible.  

the mighty masturbator lives up to its namesake.  still entertaining though even if on a purely "what the fuck" level

epicloud isn't wacky either. its not amazing though. kinda just... meh. few great tracks on it though i thought

Ki is the only good DTP album. Devin Townsend forgot how to write metal.

I wouldn't consider most of DTP to be metal to begin with. Just metal influenced. Addicted is like pop/metal. But i love the fuck out of it.

Addicted made me lose faith in DTP and Deconstructed made me give up on Townsend all together.
