In all honesty I think : Nirvana, The Foo Fighters, Pantera, Radiohead, Megadeth, are severely overrated

Iced Earth uses the same riff nonstop but they are actually quite good

i dont understand how some metal bands record an "album" with noticeably terrible fuck ups (not little ones that could be "raw") and still call it an album and people like it because of how kvlt it is.

Black metal production is a very touchy thing. I admit my view of what's good and bad is probably completely different than most. But I feel like I can tell the difference between a band that's trying and a band that just sounds bad. Like most of the war metal bands, the production is so awful that all of the riffs are just overtaken by noise. There are a handful of really good ones though.

The "blackgaze" stuff is some of the most interesting black metal being made today. There are some not so good groups, but overall I think there are a lot of exciting things happening.

also agree on the beethoven thing. its not just black metal though on the production thing. any genre i feel can be guilty of this. not saying bad sound quality wise, im saying performance-wise, some stuff is seriously below where it should be. its like they fucked up, or there guitar breaks in mid-take and then were just too lazy to go back and fix it

Eric Clapton is really overrated. Nothing he's done outside of Cream (other than Layla which Duane Allman helped write) is worth listening to.

Jimmy Page kinda sucks at playing live. He's very sloppy and boring when he tries to improvise. Usually takes too long and masturbates with his violin bow for 20 minutes.

Only Ozzy Osbournes first two solo albums were good. The rest is mostly shit outside of a few good tracks.

I agree on Link's power metal comment too. There are still a few great acts now and again, but the genre is mostly going nowhere.

It seems every new power metal band is trying to be some kind of themed corny characters and it just seems like B-music

Symphonic metal isn't actually metal, because is doesn't have any fucking riffs. It's a barrage of shit programmed strings and synths.

There is a massive difference between punk (which I never mentioned) and post punk (which I did mention). I wouldn't call The Replacements or any of their modern piers, stinky teen trash.

Neither Mostly Autumn or Alcest are symphonic metal bands. They just have some symphonic elements. I was referencing a specific sub-genre, related to power metal and populated by the likes of Nightwish and Epica. And it fucking sucks.

I think Avenged Sevenfold has done some pretty catchy stuff. Their new single, hail to the king is pure fun.

i dont think ya cant waltz into a metal forum and expect me to have anything but a rudimentary knowledge of anything besides metal. gave the replacerguys a listen. i like it, but so far it sounds like extensions and retooling of the good ole punk bands like Them Smiths or whatever.

yeah i dun goofed up saying alcest was. truth is, ive never looked up definitions for metal subgenres. i just kinda feel it out and taste the shit. if i taste elaborately depressive or atmospheric shit in the metal, i usually call it symphonic. or i go by the mood of the metal. symph - melodramatic, black - angry/sad, power - triumphant/angry, ect.
