Devin Townsend- Ziltoid the Omniscient

A good sense of humor makes for a very fun album! Plus, of course, awesome music with plenty of Devin's teen angst still in him.

You might as well download everything else by DT while you're at it, because once you listen to Ziltoid you're gonna be fiending for more...

I feel like a loser for recommending a black metal album but I want to recommend something that would otherwise be overlooked.

Have A Nice Life - Deathconsciousness

A difficult album to place in one specific genre or pigeonhole, but this band are great and the double album Deatconsciousness is a must listen to album. I'd say they are something along the lines of a mixture of post rock / post metal / shoegaze / doom / industrial / atmospheric rock.

Pagan's Mind - Enigmatic Calling

This is a mind blowing progressive metal album. I would recommend it to any prog fan because it is just fantastic.

And idk, I would consider it Power Prog, along the lines of Dream Theater. Also most references I have seen have called it prog and power metal. I still think it's a band a prog fan would enjoy even if they aren't, because there are definitely alot of prog elements

power has (in mny mind) very little to do with vocal style
yes, he does sing clean and high

but it is mainly lyrics

Just a personal thing then, I guess. When I think of prog, I think of multiple genres. Like Death Prog, Power Prog, etc. It's like Folk Metal. There's Death Folk, Black Folk, Power Folk, etc. So I tend to group Dream Theater in with Power Metal, but I guess that's wrong. My mistake

i think it is normal to think of prog as a mashup of different elements
i dont know many ways to musically describe what they are doing, but i know that dreamtheater is prog, not power.
prog cannot be contained. it is a large flowing idea that takes numerous tracks and ideas and instruments. Also contains a lyrical theme, like a story throughout.

i love prog.

Prog is great because it has complex and unique elements that a lot of other genres don't do. Since you're starting to study music and guitar, you'll learn about what makes it prog. It's mostly just different time signatures and key signatures. Combine those with large scale solos and effects, and you have prog. Great, great music.
