All right boys and girls, get ready to be pulverized by straight up brute force in this week's old school death metal lesson. The distinctive characteristic here is well, shit that's brutal. Usually filled with breakdowns (though not the shitty -core breakdowns that you're all accustomed to), blast beats, and awesomeness. NY OSDM are the originators of Brutal Death Metal. Sadly, my knowledge of this scene is quite limited.
SuffocationSuffocation is probably the most well known band of this region and probably the most influential as well. Seriously, these guys bought straight up brutality before brutal was even invented. Lots of great riffs, technicality, quality breakdowns. innovations, man Suffocation did it all. Can't give enough praise for this band. Suffocation formed in 1989 and their first release was the
Human Waste EP in 1991. The same year their released
Effigy of the Forgotten, my personal favorite release, and in 1995 they released
Pierced From Within.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_PBve_a4osImmolationAnother awesome and highly influential band, Immolation formed in 1986 and released their debut album
Dawn of Possession in 1991. I really really want to include
Here In After as well as other albums but it doesn't fit the profile of osdm, for it holds different characteristics to that of osdm (although I will say that Immolation probably has one of the most consistent discographies of any band quality-wise).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1DaKPmombUIncantationWhat's up with all the -tion bands? Who cares, they're awesome. Incantation is pretty unique in that they take a far more sinister and doomier approach to the classic NY sound. They're still awesome though and highly influential. Incantation formed in 1989 and released their first album,
Onward to Golgotha in 1992 and
Mortal Throne of Nazarene in 1994.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3L31w6Xi0IBaphomet These guys are another important band for the New York region. There is a clear hardcore influence in this band which I think makes them sound pretty cool. Their only album released was their 1992 debut

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2MWrvJu8zgInfesterDon't know too much about these guys other than they kick ass. They're another band that only released one album,
To the Depths... In Degradation, which was released in 1994. Similar to Incantation in terms of the evil sound. Strangely enough, these guys aren't from NY (Seattle in fact), but the sound is nevertheless akin to that of NY.

Into the Autumn Shade.
