But if I had to be generic I'd say War Pigs or Stairway to heaven

for metal...my vote is for metallica.

I think there were a lot of bands that paved the way but aren't completely metal. AC/DC for example many could consider hard rock.

To the world? Probably some Motley Crue song or something along those lines.

Again, probably some band from the hair metal scene (if you consider it to be metal). If not, probably something from Ozzy (Crazy Train), Metallica (Enter Sandman), or Black Sabbath (Iron Man/Paranoid).
